www.ChulaVistaPeople.com is dedicated to recognizing those people who make Chula Vista a special place to live. Whether they be politicians, educators, business owners, music teachers, cancer survivors, or the neighbor down the block, each person contributes to the character of our communities. During this Holiday of Thanksgiving, we all give a special Thanks to the Firefighters from near and far who helped keep Chula Vista and the South Bay safe. CHULA VISTA PEOPLE--NOVEMBER, 2007 CAPT. TINA WILLIAMS--Health Advocate. As Executive Director of the South Bay Family YMCA, Tina provides the programs and resources the community needs to play and be healthy. Programs include aquatics, after-school programs for children, teen programs, vacation camps, and traditional workout programs. To make these programs available to all community members, Tina must also direct massive fund raising campaigns each year. http://www.southbay.ymca.org/english/ RUFINO "PIE" ROQUE--Miracle Worker. In resurrecting the El Primero Hotel in downtown Chula Vista, Pie and his family have created a jewel for all to enjoy. During the recent fires, the El Primero Hotel provided a safe haven for evacuees and the Roque family made sure the stay was as pleasant as possible, including their daily continental breakfast in their beautiful courtyard. http://www.ElPrimeroHotel.com/ CHULA VISTA PEOPLE--2007 PEOPLE OF THE YEAR In any community, there are people and families that are so intertwined with the city that it is hard to imagine the city without them. For their monumental contributions to our communities, the 2007 People of the Year are: CHERYL AND GREG COX--Community Service. To choose to serve the public good is not uncommon. For one family to agree to serve the public in such high-profile positions IS uncommon. Mayor Cheryl Cox and County Supervisor Greg Cox lead the South Bay in a time of unprecedented change. Including Cheryl's father, John Willett, the number of hours per day this family devotes to serving the public good is staggering. TODD HOFF--Compassion. If you were in charge of running a hospital, nobody would be surprised if you sat in your office all day crunching numbers, doing paperwork, and answer phone calls. But what would happen if you were also able to find the time to visit the patients, talk with staff about their work needs, and find ways of constantly improving your hospital. If you could, you would be Todd Hoff of Scripps Mercy Hospital in Chula Vista. BILL HALL--Leadership. Being a natural leader can sometimes be a curse. The curse is that you are constantly re-drafted to serve again! Whether it be the Navy, the San Diego Port Authority, or the many Board of Directors he serves on, Bill is always in demand. How is it that the busiest people always make the time to shake a hand, answer questions politely, and give the encouraging word? Our guess is that having a wife like Isabel probably helps. SCOTT MCMILLIN--Philanthropy. To say that the McMillin family has had an impact on Eastern Chula Vista would be the understatement of the year. In addition to providing the homes many residents live in, the McMillin companies have provided employment for many of those same residents. But this honor is given for the ongoing and significant financial generosity of the McMillin families. The South Bay YMCA and Southwestern College are just two of our valuable community organizations that have benefitted from the McMillin's donations. Copyright © 2007 All rights reserved.
